Castaway Cay vs. Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point: Which Disney Island Is Actually Better?
People ask me this constantly: which Disney island is better? I'm done being diplomatic.
They're both exceptional, but they are not the same experience, and pretending they're interchangeable does you a disservice when you're planning a trip. I've been to both multiple times. Here's the honest comparison.
“The right answer depends entirely on who you’re traveling with and what kind of beach day you actually want.”
The Quick Answer
Castaway Cay is easier, more established, and the better choice for families with young kids or guests who prioritize seamless logistics.
Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point has more spectacular beaches, deeper cultural authenticity, and is the better experience for guests who enjoy exploring and don't mind a longer walk to get there.
If you can visit both on the same itinerary, do it. But if you're choosing, here's how to decide.
Getting There: Convenience Matters More Than You Think
Castaway Cay
You walk straight off the ship. Trams run constantly. Everything is within easy reach. Families with young kids, strollers, or guests with mobility concerns will appreciate the frictionless access. You can pop back to the ship for a nap and return without any logistical drama.
Lookout Cay
The pier at Lookout Cay is over half a mile long, with no shade. In summer heat, that walk back to the ship after a full beach day is genuinely exhausting. Disney has added golf cart shuttles for guests with disabilities and red wagons for families with small children, but the pier walk is a real consideration, especially with tired kids.
Disney built the long pier specifically to protect the coral reef underneath it. Environmentally intentional. But experience it before you assume it won't matter to your family.
“That Resort Girl Tip
Wear shorts over your swimsuit when you disembark at Lookout Cay, as the return walk in just a swimsuit is longer and warmer than most guests expect. Bring water.”
The Beaches
Castaway Cay
Classic, iconic, exactly what you picture when someone says 'Disney private island.' White sand, turquoise water, immaculately maintained. The family beach divides into intuitive zones: Pelican Plunge waterpark area, family beach with chair service, watersports. Serenity Bay, the adults-only beach, is one of the most peaceful places in all of Disney cruising.
Lookout Cay
Objectively, Lookout Cay's beaches may be more beautiful. The sand has a distinctive pale pink hue. The water color is extraordinary. Once you get past the pier and onto the main beach, the setting is breathtaking in a way that doesn't feel manufactured. The tradeoff is layout. Lookout Cay is less intuitive to navigate on a first visit.
Activities and What to Do
At Castaway Cay
Pelican Plunge over-water playground with waterslide
Watersports: aqua trikes, kayaking, parasailing, stingray adventures
Bike rentals to the lookout tower: one of the best things to do here
Character meet-and-greets on the beach
Serenity Bay (adults-only): get there early
At Lookout Cay
Nature Trail to the Lighthouse: highlight for adults, educational for kids
Bahamian cultural experiences: live Junkanoo, local crafts, regional music
Water activities: snorkeling, kayaking, paddle sports
Quieter beaches at the trail's end: most guests skip these entirely
Food
Castaway Cay
Classic BBQ buffet: burgers, hot dogs, ribs, brisket sandwiches. Reliably good. Nothing groundbreaking, but it's all included and nobody goes home hungry.
Lookout Cay
A genuine edge over Castaway Cay. The menu incorporates Bahamian-inspired dishes: regional spices, local ingredients, options that actually reflect Eleuthera's culture. For food-focused travelers, this matters.
Can You Visit Both?
Yes, some itineraries include both islands. Both are in the Bahamas and relatively close to each other. A 5-night sailing that visits Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay back-to-back is one of the best DCL itinerary options available right now.

My Honest Recommendation
Kids under 5: Choose Castaway Cay. The logistics are smoother and young kids don't need the cultural context that makes Lookout Cay special.
School-age kids or adults: Lookout Cay is the more interesting day.
Can do both: That's the answer every time.
